Review of The Crawler In The Attic (2016 Film):

Even though “The Crawler in the Attic” had no subtitles and I only understand rudimentary Japanese, I really enjoyed the film. Shoji Kubota manages to bring new life to what is one of the quintessential Japanese eroductions. The cinematography, music, editing and acting bring to life Rampo’s tale of deviant behaviour and murderous intent in what is never salacious, although not unproblematic in places, 21st century roman porno.
With a story set in a boarding house in Tokyo in the 1920s, Lord Voyeurist Goda is the Vicar of the title of the film. He traverses the beams and spies on the strange sexual encounters that  occur under his roof between figures as colorful as a girl dressed in  animal skins and an overgrown Pierrot.
Although  for all intents and purposes, virtually unworkable, Tanaka’s aesthetic  sensibilities give a perverse and otherwise atmosphere to what could  have represented little more than a series of decisive pieces, although  the introduction of a murder scheme introduces some other dimension in the narrative.
The film is quite hypnotic, beautifully shot and “chock-a-block” full of stunning images. For  those who are not yet familiar with the non-insignificant charms of  Nippon’s eroticism, this film represents one of the finest in its field.
